Bear Systems is building on its next generation cybersecurity platform to provide a range of SIMPLE (Secure Integrated ML Platform Leveraging Expertise) solutions for the world’s most pressing needs. This blog entry is one of a series of introductions showing how Bear can provide a SIMPLE solution for specific vertical challenges.
Insurance is a vast vertical that covers largescale issues across natural disasters, corporate misbehavior, personal health, and, increasingly, cybersecurity. In all of these cases, the goal is to understand risk as much as possible in order to create financial rules that optimize the balance between that risk and target profit margins. Each of the main markets with the overall insurance world really need the same thing – intelligent information.
Unfortunately, innumerable IoT providers heard “information” and started putting sensors on everything they could imagine. Security was, at best, an afterthought as was the reality that building a whole bunch of disparate types of data really did not help anybody. The predictable end result is what we see today – massive amounts of data that nobody knows what to do with. “Success” today is having any ability to filter this information with no ability to use this data in a manner that enhances risk comprehension.
SIMPLE Insurance is focused on overcoming ignorant data by moving out to the point of data collection and applying domain expertise throughout each system. At the point of collection, device experts understand what is normal and abnormal for their devices and SIMPLE Insurance captures that information as Device Profiles. The output of those profiles are unified, understandable, anomalies that represent a fraction of the overall data; are unified across all types of devices, and only represent events that are of interest.
At the next level, system experts understand how their systems should work and, to that end, they can develop System Profiles based on the output of the Device Profiles. At this level, the focus in more on communications, device interactions, and performance levels. The only things coming out of these automated processes are anomalous system activities which represent an even smaller fraction of the overall data. As we move up systems, across assets, and so forth, the data becomes tighter, more actionable, and more intelligent. Each level outputs anomalies and unified logging that shows metrics, responses, and performance – intelligent data focused on everything from compliance to operational technology management optimization.
The combination of anomalous activity, automated tasks to and from the edge of each system, and the logs providing insights over time finally transform the flood of meaningless data into intelligent information. Information that can be used to understand risk, predict risk change over time and develop smarter risk tolerance algorithms to better determine profit-oriented financial models.
